Prototype history
Leopard II is a third-generation main battle tank that is in service with 19 NATO armies. It is a fast and maneuverable combat vehicle equipped with advanced military technologies for movement, control, and combat. The history of Leopard II began in the mid-1970s when there was a need in Europe for a fast tank with high firepower. Its production was developed by a consortium of German companies, including well-known military technology manufacturers such as Krauss-Maffei, Rheinmetall AG, and others.
In its modern form, the tank was developed in the 1990s when it acquired recognizable contours, a powerful main gun, and control and defense systems.
Modern modifications of Leopard II are equipped with a 120 mm main gun with an automatic fire control system. The turret is divided into a crew compartment and an ammunition bunker. It has powerful frontal armor and is equipped with active protection.
The 1500 hp engine allows the tank to move at speeds up to 72 km/h for up to 500 km. This is one of the most advanced combat vehicles that are now successfully demonstrating its capabilities in real combat operations.
